Insights from Nathan Ronen, CFA
Hey, everyone! Nathan Ronen, CFA, here with another update for candidates across the CFA® Level I, Level II, and Level III programs (“Level 1,” “Level 2,” and “Level 3”). This one is also dedicated to those standing at the crossroads, debating the merits of diving further into the CFA program. The perennial question resurfaces: "Should I pursue the CFA designation, and how many hours do I need to dedicate to conquer each level of the CFA program?"
To CFA or Not to CFA? That is the Dilemma
Many individuals find themselves at a pivotal juncture, not just contemplating entry into the CFA program but also mulling over advancing to Level 2 or Level 3. Some are even recovering from a setback at CFA Level 1. "Hey Nathan, should I embark on the CFA journey?" It's a question I relish, and a significant aspect of my profession is offering pragmatic advice without a self-serving agenda. The truth is, the CFA path isn't universally fitting.
Reality Check: CFA Isn't a One-Size-Fits-All Solution
Picture asking your dad if you should become an investment banker or seeking your neighbor's opinion on whether to buy, lease, or rent a car. Each decision has its nuances, and not every choice suits everyone. Similarly, the CFA program, like any designation, certification, or degree, isn't a perfect match for everyone.
- Interest in Finance: Not everyone finds finance captivating, and that's perfectly fine.
- Time Commitment: The CFA journey demands a substantial time commitment, not just to pass but to truly absorb the knowledge.
- Study Habits: Studious habits are a necessity; if you're not inclined to study or read, it might be an uphill battle.
- Expectations: Don't anticipate an automatic salary hike or a dream job after getting your CFA charter. It's about enhancing analytical skills and knowledge, and about developing your personal human capital and professional brand.
Beyond Letters: It's About Credibility
Let's dispel a myth - having CFA, MBA, JD or PhD after your name isn't a magical ticket to instant success. It's more about credibility, especially if you're pursuing a specific field requiring accreditation or certification. It's not a shortcut to a million-dollar job or an extravagant lifestyle.
The Reading Dilemma: Videos vs. Books
Now, the age-old debate: videos or books? While video learning can be a valuable supplement, it can't replace thorough reading. The CFA program entails thousands of pages, and watching videos alone won't cut it.
Time Commitment Realities
Dispelling another misconception - studying 50 to 100 hours for each level isn't realistic. With pass rates at 35%, 45%, and 50% for CFA Level 1, 2, and 3, respectively, the program demands substantial effort. Be wary of inflated success stories; the truth often lies in the dedication to study.
Personalized Approach: No One-Size-Fits-All
Is it 300 hours, 400 hours, or more? The answer depends on you. Your reading habits, background, and ability to focus all play a role. There's no universal formula; it's about understanding yourself. If you work with me at Chalk & Board, I will help develop a personalized study plan for you that is based on your background, skills and availability.
Make an Informed Decision
In conclusion, the decision to pursue the CFA designation should align with your goals, ambitions, and the time you're willing to invest. It's an investment in education and analytical skills, not just a means to an end.
