Insights from Nathan Ronen, CFA

Hey there, aspiring CFA® Level I (“Level 1”) candidates! Nathan Ronen, CFA, here with a special update just for you. I've noticed some concerns from CFA Level 1 candidates about the abundance of advice and strategies I share for Level 2 and Level 3. Don't worry; I've got you covered! In this post, I'll address your Level 1 journey and offer valuable insights to boost your confidence and success.

Confidence is Key: Confidence is the cornerstone of success, not just in exams but in life. Without confidence, it's challenging to achieve your goals. So, first and foremost, build that confidence within yourself. You've got this!

Mock Exams: Many Level 1 candidates express anxiety about CFA mock exam scores. It's crucial to understand that mock exams serve as study tools, not crystal balls predicting your real exam performance. There's often low-to-mixed correlation between mock scores and actual exam scores due to the undisclosed nature of CFA Institute's questions, especially as you go up the CFA exam levels. So instead of as purely evaluative tools, use mock exams to reinforce your knowledge and as a part of your study routine during the final review weeks.

Don't Fall for Silver Bullets: Avoid the temptation to find one-to-one correlations between your mock and question bank (“qbank”) scores and real exam outcomes. Every candidate's journey is unique. There's no magic formula or guaranteed score based on mock performance. Trust your preparation, focus on understanding the material, and resist the allure of shortcuts.

Say No to Exam Forums: During this stressful exam period, steer clear of anonymous forums and advice from unidentified sources. Listening to others' experiences can lead to unnecessary stress or create false hopes. Instead, focus on credible study sources and your preparation plan.

Confidence Over Fear: Understand that your fear or lack of confidence can hinder your performance. Approach the CFA Level 1 exam with a positive mindset. Believe in your preparation and abilities. Confidence, not false bravado, is the key to success.
