New tips from Nathan Ronen, CFA

Hey everybody, Nathan Ronen, CFA here with another update for all CFA® candidates at the CFA Level I (“Level 1”), CFA Level II (“Level 2”), and CFA Level III (“Level 3”) stages of the CFA Program. Whether you're already in the program or contemplating joining, you're probably wondering: "How many hours do I need to study to pass my CFA exam?"

Let's discuss this question.

Industry Guidelines and Real-World Insights
The often-cited industry standard number of hours to study for a CFA exam is around 300-350 hours per level. But I'm here to tell you that it's not about the quantity of hours, but the quality of your study time. I've seen CFA candidates pass with as few as 150-200 hours and others fail despite studying 750-800 hours. The difference often lies in the effectiveness of your study approach.

Tailoring Your CFA Exam Study Plan
Each CFA level requires a different study strategy:

  • Level 1: Focus on multiple choice questions.
  • Level 2: Concentrate on item sets.
  • Level 3: Prepare for essays and item sets.

You don’t necessarily need 9 months to study. A structured, individualized CFA exam study plan is crucial. At Chalk & Board, when we develop personalized study plans for our students we consider your background, work experience, and available study time. For instance, John's study plan will differ from Kim's because everyone's needs and circumstances are unique.

The Importance of Mentorship
If you're unsure about your study strategy, consider getting a mentor. Having someone to guide you can significantly enhance the quality of your preparation. If you join Chalk & Board as a student, I'll be happy to help you create a customized study plan and guide you through the process.

Quality Over Quantity
Stop fixating on the number of CFA exam study hours. Focus on the quality of your study sessions. Practice extensively, use the right materials, and understand how to apply the concepts. Quality preparation will get you ready for exam day.
